About Hume Hunt Club Inc.
The Hume Hunt Inc is a recreational association for people with equine interests which services a number of important community interests, namely:
- encouraging participation of people from all walks of life in a healthy outdoor activity,
- helping to control the feral fox population in our local rural environment.
Our members range in age from primary school children to people in their seventies. We meet fortnightly during the winter on properties on which we are invited to hunt. Our home hunting property is in Barnawartha. This is where the fifteen couple (30) English Fox Hounds are kennelled and where basic training & many of the subsequent hunts take place. Our invitation hunts draw visitors from as far afield as Melbourne.
By hunting on properties we have a positive impact on the fox population and help control their adverse effect on native fauna and farm animals. One fox alone consumes 300kg of native wildlife each year. We are affiliated with Hunt Clubs Association of Victoria and as a consequence are governed by their rules & regulations.
We have a strong association with a number of the local Pony Clubs and have several invitation hunts where Pony Club members are invited to come and participate in our sport. These hunts are typically the best attended hunts on our calendar.
Each event involves around three to four hours of exercise for horses and riders and is usually followed by a BBQ and social activities. Benefits realised by participants include healthy outdoor exercise, being part of a club, learning about the welfare of horses & hounds, organising & supporting the running of events,
Our financial independence is derived primarily from our annual Hume Hunt Ball which often attracts around 200 visitors. Our other income comes mostly from our membership fees. The club has strong support from local land owners and business sponsors such as Pet Stock Wodonga, Pre Mix King Wodonga and Peards Garden Centre.
